In the September 2018 issue of our magazine, I wrote an article called, “Common Sense Creation.” In this article, I stated the reason why we at Prophecy in the News believe the age of the earth is around 6,000 years old and is considered a “Young Earth.” We don’t believe the earth is millions of years old, as some scientist and many Bible scholars would have you believe. You can read “Common Sense Creation” on our website under “Articles.” The main reason for the difference in opinion for the “Old Earth” and the “Young Earth” is the fall of Lucifer–known as Satan–from heaven. The one question that many don’t understand is “when did Lucifer fall from heaven?” This is a crucial point in understanding the 6-day creation and why our earth is not millions of years old.
Let’s go back to the beginning of time and take a look at what the Bible says about it. Moses, under the divine direction of God, was appointed to reveal the historical account of the creation of the earth in the book of Genesis. God made his words very simple. There have been attempts by some Christians to harmonize the Genesis account of creation with the theories of modern geology and evolution.
If God had wanted us to understand that there was a “Gap” of millions or even billions of years between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2, involving so many details about Lucifer, sin, judgment of the earth and the re-creation of the earth, our “common sense” tells us that God would have instructed Moses to relate some or all of the details. Surely, He would have provided Moses with the knowledge and words to at least give us a glimpse into what happened during all those millions of years. But strangely, God did not do that, yet He gave us a full description of the 6-days of creation.
So, you have to ask yourself: “Why not?” Has the “Gap Theory” of millions of years been invented by man to appease the scientist, to appease the Christian world, and to appease the non-believers of today? Did creation really happen over millions of years, the way secular scientist and some so-called “Bible scholars” tell you it did? God simply told us about the 6 days of creation. Man has added the millions of years.
Think seriously about this. Don’t you find it puzzling that if our earth had evolved over millions of years, then why didn’t God mention it in the Bible? Why are the only words in the scriptures that Bible scholars say proves the earth is millions of years old is in Genesis 1:2 when it says, “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.” You would think these millions of years would have been very important for God to reveal to Moses; yet, not a word. Hummmm.
When I read Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth,” to me, this is an opening statement setting the stage for what will happen in the following verses. The next verse says, Genesis 1:2, “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” I understand this to mean that the earth had not yet taken shape and was empty of all things (land, mountains, animals, and people).
So, the first thing God created was the earth, and it was originally covered in newly-created water, and there was darkness all around. Some Christian scientist today tell you the earth started out as a huge ball of water. There was darkness upon the watery earth (face of the deep), because God had not yet created light. Verse 3 goes on to say, “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”
Now we know that the sun wasn’t created until the fourth day, so how could there be light on the first day of Creation? Verse 5 tells us that, “God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” This established a 24-hour day, which is also known as a “Solar Day.”
Genesis 1:16 says, “And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.” Verse 19 states, “And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.”
So, we know that on Day 4 there was the creation of the sun, the moon, and the stars. But, what about that light on the first, second, and third day? Well, we know that God is infinite, an all-powerful omnipotent God. He doesn’t need the sun, the moon, or the stars to provide light. God is light, and we see that in 1 John 1:5, “…God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” God Himself was the light for the first three days of Creation. John 8:12 says: “…I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
You may even wonder how there could even be an evening and morning or day and night without the sun. But remember, all that is needed for day and night is a light source and a spinning, rotating earth. Those were created on Day 1, just like the Bible tells us!
My father, Dr. J.R. Church, explained how God placed the Sun and Moon in the sky on the fourth day. Using an astronomy program called Starry Night Pro, he could trace the date of the beginning of creation, and this computer software would show him just where the stars would have been placed in the heavens at that time. Of course, we know the stars had not yet been created on Day 1 of creation, but the stars have a pattern of movement and with this program, he could go back in time to see just what that star pattern would have been. It could show him what would have been happening in the sky, 6,000 years ago.
The article this was taken from is called, “The Untold Story Behind Creation Week” (February 2018). In the words of my dad:
“Of course, there was no moon or sun on the first day of Creation. They were not created until the fourth day. But God would have created them in a fourth-day position so that we could back up to the first day and find the sun and moon where we would expect them to be. Otherwise, the rabbis would be celebrating the new moon of autumn as the fourth day of the month instead of the first!”
He went on to say at the end of the article:
“According to the astronomical events on September 25, 4004 BC, it seems evident that God created the universe in six days, beginning on Sunday. He created Adam on Friday and rested on Saturday.”
“Old Earth” creationist supporting the Gap Theory have tried to place a gap of time – millions and even billions of years – between the first two verses of Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. Using the verse, “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep” to explain the millions of years of evolution upon the earth. Gap theorists oppose evolution but believe in an ancient origin of the universe. Christians who believe in the Gap Theory tell you-absolutely-that they don’t believe in evolution, yet the history of the Gap Theory all stems back to the roots of evolution.
There are many versions of this Gap Theory, one being the “Ruin-and-Restoration” theory. It allows the fallible theories of secular scientists to determine the meaning of the Holy Scriptures. Some Bible scholars have also put the fall of Lucifer or Satan in this “millions-of-years” time period, yet any rebellion of Lucifer during this gap of time totally contradicts God’s description of His completed creation on Day 6, when the Bible says in Genesis 1:31, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”
The idea of the Gap Theory can be traced back to the obscure writings of the Dutchman, Episcopius (1583-1643), but it was first recorded from one of the lectures of Dr. Thomas Chalmers in 1814. Chalmers, a notable Scottish theologian, lived from 1780 to 1847 and was the first moderator of the Free Church of Scotland. Other Bible scholars continued to promote this theory in the following years until, today, we see it taught in Bible colleges, Prophecy ministries, and churches across the country.
For Christians, there are many problems with the “Gap Theory.” Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis names a few of these problems.
First, the gap of millions-of-years is inconsistent with God creating everything in six days, as Scripture states. “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it” (Exodus 20:11). Thus, the creation of the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1) and the sea and all that is in them (the rest of the creation) was completed in six days. Is there any time for a gap?
Second, it puts death, disease, and suffering before the Fall of Adam. When gap theorists believe that disease, decay, and death existed before Adam sinned, they ignore that this contradicts the teachings of Scripture. Romans 5:12 says, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
This clearly teaches us that sin entered in the world by one man-Adam, not Lucifer. Remember, Lucifer was an angel, not a man. The Bible doesn’t say, “sin entered into the world by an angel.” The angel, Lucifer, is just another name for Satan. In Hebrew, the name Lucifer is translated from the Hebrew word “helel,” which means brightness. Lucifer is referred to as the “son of the morning” which we see in Isaiah 14:12-14: “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!”
So, from Romans 5:12, we understand that there could not have been human sin or death before Adam. The Bible teaches us in 1 Corinthians 15 that Adam was the first man, and as a result of his rebellion (sin), death and corruption (disease, bloodshed, and suffering) entered the world.
So, before Adam sinned, there could not have been any animal or human death. Most importantly, there could not have been a race of men before Adam that died in Lucifer’s flood, because 1 Corinthians 15:45 tells us that Adam was the first man: “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul.”
We know that Lucifer fell from heaven, but the age-old question is… “When was Lucifer created and when did he fall from heaven, know as the ‘third heaven’ or ‘heaven of heavens’?”
We know from Scripture, that among the angels, under the leadership of Lucifer, an archangel of great power and beauty, that a rebellion took place against God, and Lucifer fell. We know that some of God’s angels became demons, but Gap theorist contend, because of this, the earth was placed under the curse that caused the “Gap” of millions-of-years between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. Again, Isaiah 14:12 says: “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!”
The Old Earth/Gap Theory believes that Lucifer’s fall brought God’s judgment in the form of a flood named for him: Lucifer’s flood. They believe that the fossil record, which they claimed was formed over hundreds of millions of years, was a result of this flood. The Gap Theory does away with the evidence of the historical, global Noah’s flood that is recorded in the book of Genesis.
So, if the fossil record was formed by Lucifer’s flood, then just what did the global Flood of Noah’s day do? To explain this, the gap theorist is forced to conclude that the global flood of Noah must have left virtually no trace. They explain Noah’s flood as a local event. Yet, God tells us in Genesis 6 that the Noah’s flood was global and a judgment for man’s sin. Water flooded the earth for over a year (Genesis 6:17, 7:19-24), so it wasn’t just a local event.
Gap theorists also use Ezekiel 28:13 & 15 to prove that this prehistoric earth that Lucifer was placed on was the Garden of Eden. “Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering…in the day that thou was created.” So, this would prove that the Gap Theory is correct…right? Wrong!
To prove my point that the earth is not millions of years old, we need to go back to the Scriptures and look at when the Garden of Eden was created. But first, let’s establish when the “Heaven of Heavens” was created in which the angels live.
In Genesis 1:6-8, we learn that on Day 2 of Creation, God divided the waters on the earth. Some of the water stayed on earth to eventually form the oceans, lakes, and rivers. The Bible says that the rest of the water was divided from the water on earth and placed “above the firmament.” So, on Day 2, God created our atmosphere – what we call the “sky” – and, also, outer space. Verse 8 says: “And God called the firmament Heaven.” This firmament refers to a space called “heaven.” Therefore, we know Heaven was created on Day 2. So, how can anyone say that Lucifer fell from heaven if heaven didn’t exist until Day 2?
I know what you’re thinking. Was this the heaven where the angels live? Let’s take a look at what the Bible says about that.
The Bible doesn’t give an exact time of Lucifer’s creation or of his fall, but does give some very important clues. Paul says in Colossians 1 that God created all things. Colossians 1:16 says: “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, …” The “invisible” would include the angels.
The Bible speaks of a “third heaven.” “I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.” (Corinthians 12:2 ).
The Bible also speaks of the third heaven or “heaven of heavens” in 1 Kings 8:27: “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?”
The heaven of heavens is the residing place of the heavenly host, the angels. Again, in Nehemiah 9: 6 we read of the heaven of heavens. “Thou, even thou, are Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.”
So, when was this heaven of heavens created? We assume that the heaven of heavens was created along with the physical heavens – our physical universe, where the stars, sun, and moon would abide after they were created on Day 4 during creation week.
Since the heaven of heavens is referred to with the earth, seas, and physical heaven, we can safely assume that they were all created during the same time frame—during creation week. Those who teach the Old Earth/Gap Theory would have you believe that the third heaven, or heaven of heavens, has been around for millions of years, along with Lucifer, but that is not what the Bible says.
Exodus 20:11 confirms this and simply states, “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” We can confirm that all the angels were created by the sixth day of creation.
Exactly what day in the week of Creation were the angels created is debatable. Was it on the fourth day, when God created the heaven of heavens. Or on the first day, as possibly indicated in Job 38: 4-7? Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding. 5. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who hath stretched the line upon it? 6. Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; 7. When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
This may imply that God created the angelic beings early on the first day, but one thing we know for sure is that He created them during the first week of Creation.
Now that we have established when the third heaven was created and when Lucifer was created, let’s take a look at when the Garden of Eden was created. Remember, the Old Earth/Gap Theorist use Ezekiel 28: 13 & 15 to prove this prehistoric earth, that Lucifer was placed on, was the Garden of Eden. “Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering…in the day that thou was created.”
Well, we know on Day 1, God created a water-covered earth, and on Day 2, He created our atmosphere and outer space, but at that time, there was still nothing on the earth – no land yet and nothing in space! Day 3 is when God started filling up the earth!
Genesis 1:9-13 tells us that God commanded the water to go into one place so that dry land could appear. “And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.”
It seems God created one big giant ocean and one big giant continent and on that continent was the “Garden of Eden.” Genesis 3:23-24 gives the account of God driving Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden and placing, at the east of the garden, cherubim and a flaming sword to “keep the way of the tree of life.” Christian scientist can show us that the great flood of Noah was what caused the big continent to break up into the seven continents that we have today.
In our DVD series Is Genesis History?, these Christian scientists explain why the earth was so dramatically changed during Noah’s global flood. This flood was not just a little rain storm that lasted for 40 days and 40 nights. It was a dramatic and violent transformation of the earth, and scientist today can prove it. So, when some of these so-called Bible scholars tell you they know exactly where the Garden of Eden today is located, tell them that that’s just not possible.
Now that we have established the Garden of Eden, lush with everything needed to sustain life, let’s move to Day 6, when God commanded the earth to bring forth living creatures (Genesis 1:24-25). This is when God created all the animals we know today, plus many we don’t, such as the dinosaurs.
After God finished creating the animals, He turned His attention to His most important creation – mankind! “…Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26). Verse 27 goes on to tell us that “…in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Genesis 2: 21-22 describes the method of the creation of woman from Adam. God then blessed them: “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth…and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:28).
We have Lucifer being created sometime between Day 1 through Day 4, but probably through Day 3, the Garden of Eden being created on Day 3 and Adam and Eve were created on Day 6, so where does the fall of Lucifer come onto the scene? Let’s start with looking at Genesis 1:31-2:1 when the Bible says, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.”
Let’s analyze these two verses. First God saw “every thing” that He had made, and said it was very good! This included the full earth and the full heavens, the animals and Adam and Eve, and yes, the angels, including Lucifer. It says the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. That includes the angels! Lucifer was created very good, but Ezekiel 28: 15 tells us: “Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.”
So, just when did Lucifer fall from heaven? “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” (Isaiah 14:12).
When Lucifer sinned, he was cast from heaven. This must have been after Day 6, because remember, on that sixth Day, in Genesis 1:31, God declared every thing He had made as very good! If Lucifer had already fallen, God would have pronounced Satan’s rebellion as very good, but we know throughout the Scriptures that sin is always detestable to God – an abomination in His eyes. On Day 7, God sanctifies that day as the day of rest. It seems unlikely God would have declared that day “holy” if it has been a day of rebellion.
In Genesis 1:28, on the sixth day, God gave the commandment to Adam and Eve to “be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.” If they had waited very long to have sexual relationships with one another, that would have been a sin against God’s command to be fruitful. It seems reasonable that it couldn’t have been very long after Day 7 that Satan tempted Eve through the serpent.
When Satan fell from heaven, he brought sin to the human race in the Garden of Eden. Through the serpent, he tempted Eve, who “gave also unto her husband” Adam, with the promise that if “ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”
We see this first account of sin entering the world by “one man” in Genesis 3. Romans 5:12 tells us: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Today, just as we inherit physical characteristics from our parents, we also inherit our sinful nature from Adam.
It is likely that the fall of Satan would have taken place soon after Day 7. Archbishop Ussher, the great 17th-century Bible scholar, placed Satan’s fall on the tenth day of the first year, which is the Day of Atonement. The fall of Satan would likely have been soon after Day 7. I recently spoke with Pastor Billy Crone about this, and he agreed.
Many Christians today are like “Doubting Thomas.” They find it so hard to fully trust the Scriptures and the Word of God. To have that trust, you would have to go against many of your fellow Christians, and society in general today. It is so much easier to “go with the flow.” The Bible clearly tells the history of the Creation of the earth. Not a world that formed over millions of years, but a world that was just being created for the first time.
Unfortunately, the Bible doesn’t tell us where God came from. We know that man was made in his image, but where God came from will always be a mystery, until the day we meet our maker. We know that God is the Creator of life, and whatever exists owes its origin to Him. We understand that God, as the Creator, brought something out of nothing and we accept this by faith.
It takes courage to go up against the scientific community. It also takes courage to go up against many so-called Bible scholars and theologians who have led us to believe numerous false teachings. They have twisted, changed, turned and falsely interpreted the Bible to make you believe what they want you to believe.
The Bible warns us of false teachers and their false teachings in the end times. You see, it is so much easier and convenient to go along with the scientific secular world today, but Christian scientist is now proving them to be wrong.
Just know one thing for sure. The Scriptures are the infallible Word of God. I remind you once again that Romans 5:12 says: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”
We know from studying the Bible that Lucifer was the first to sin and he sinned before Adam and Eve sinned. Lucifer was an angel who tempted the “one man” that caused sin to enter the world.
You’ve heard the saying, “The devil made me do it.” Well, the Bible doesn’t teach us that. We sin whether Satan enters us or not because we have inherited that sinful nature from our ancestor, Adam. Satan influenced Adam and Eve to sin, but they sinned on their own. When God created them, He gave them a “free will” – the freedom to choose good from evil. God loved us so much that he gave us that freedom. He wanted us to freely choose Him, not to be forced to love Him.
Satan used pride to tempt Eve and her husband. Death and suffering are not the results of Satan’s rebellion, because man had dominion over the world, not Satan. When Satan rebelled, the world wasn’t cursed, but when Adam sinned, the ground was cursed, and death entered the world.
Those who believe in the Old Earth/Gap Theory would have you believe that when Satan was cast from heaven, God was so angry, He destroyed the world in a catastrophic Lucifer’s Flood, and then it took millions and billions of years to put it back together as we see it today. That is simply not what the Bible teaches in the Scriptures.
One thing that we know for sure is Jesus died on the cross to forgive us of our sins and give us the opportunity to live in that “heaven of heavens” with Him one day.
John 3:3 tells us, “…Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” But, in John 3:16 God assures us: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” God didn’t send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that they might be saved! (John 3:17).
