Wow, what an unbelievable announcement in the last day that Israel is planning a lunar landing from aboard a SpaceX rocket taking off from Cape Canaveral towards the end of the year. How does a little country like Israel reach the moon?
An Israeli spacecraft will land on the moon early in 2019, the SpaceIL corporation announced Tuesday, in a mission which would make Israel the fourth country to make a lunar landing.
The SpaceIL spacecraft will be launched from the United States on a Falcon 9 orbital launch vehicle, built by Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX.
At a press conference on Tuesday, SpaceIL representatives announced that the unmanned lunar landing craft will be transferred to the US in November, with a launch date in December.
According to SpaceIL, the unmanned space vessel will reach the moon and complete the lunar landing on February 13th next year.
If successful, the mission would make Israel the fourth country to make a soft-landing by an unmanned vehicle on the moon. The USSR, US, and China have landed unmanned vehicles in “soft landings” since 1966. The US remains the only country to have undertaken a manned mission to the moon, with six successful Apollo mission lunar landings from 1969 through 1972.
During its mission, the unmanned SpaceIL vehicle will plant the Israeli flag on the moon, SpaceIL CEO Dr. Ido Anteby said.
“We will plant the Israeli flag on the moon,” said Anteby. “This is a small but smart spacecraft. It is 2 meters (6.6 feet) in diameter and about half a meter (1.65 feet) tall. It weighs 600 kilograms (1,323 pounds). When it lands on the moon, it will weigh 180 kilograms (397 pounds).
After its launch, the SpaceIL spacecraft will be carried into an Earth orbit at some 60,000 kilometers (37,282 miles) from the surface of the Earth.
It is truly the fulfillment of our forefather, Jacob’s dream in the Torah, where in Genesis 28:10-17, Jacob dreams of a ladder between Earth and Heaven, and the angels of G-d were ascending and descending on the ladder. At which point, G-d tells Jacob that:
“The land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it and to thy seed…And behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee whithersoever thou goest, and will bring thee back unto this land, for I will not leave thee until I have done that which of have spoken to thee of.”
Truly, after the six million martyrs and horrors of the Holocaust, G-d has indeed kept his promise to the Jewish people and has brought us back to the Holy Land, our land.
But moreover, G-d has extended the ladder of Jacob from Earth to Heaven for us. He has blessed us so that the deserts bloom; we are spearheading new technologies and innovations and even going to the moon and stars; Israel is the “Start-up Nation” economic miracle; and our military with G-d’s help is incredibly brave and strong.
The angels are ascending and descending–they are descending from G-d in Heaven bringing blessings to His people, and ascending, visiting our hopes, aspirations, and prayers back to G-d Almighty.
I am not only so proud of Israel launching a lander to the Moon, but also I am so in awe to watch the prophecy of the Torah fulfilled before our very eyes. May Hashem soon bring the completion of the Mashiach in our times, speedily and in our days. Amen.
