Donald Trump’s rejection of the Paris climate deal is seen by China as an opportunity to burnish its global leadership credentials as Beijing seeks to shape a new world order.
The decision was branded a “global setback” by official Chinese media, which also accused the US of being “reckless” and “crippling the country’s world leadership”.
But the withdrawal also means that China – the world’s largest polluter – has emerged as the global champion in combatting carbon emissions, a position Beijing is keen to exploit.
Professor Nick Bisley, an international relations expert at La Trobe University in Melbourne, said: “It does provide China with exactly the kind of opportunity it wants in which it can present itself as providing leadership on a key issue in a way which resonates with their ‘mutual benefit’ formulation.”
